Q: What do stars do?

A: Stars emit light and energy, provide a source of illumination in the night sky, help us measure time through the changing positions of constellations, and are used by astronomers to study the universe.

Q: How long have stars been around?

A: Scientists estimate that the universe is about 13.8 billion years old and that stars began forming shortly after its creation.

Q: Why are stars so important?

A: Stars are essential for life on Earth as we know it. They provide warmth and light for plants to photosynthesize, generate elements like carbon through fusion reactions, and create gravitational forces that give shape to galaxies.

Q: What causes stars to shine?

A: Stars produce their own light and heat through nuclear fusion reactions in which two hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium atoms. This releases a large amount of energy in the form of radiation that can be seen from Earth as starlight.

Q: Are all stars the same?

A: No, there is a wide variety of stars with different masses, ages, temperatures, colors, sizes, and compositions. Some examples include red dwarfs, blue giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes and more!
